Autism and ADHD can affect attention, sensory processing, emotional regulation, sleep, communication and the ability to manage everyday demands. For some individuals, these differences are accompanied by significant anxiety, exhaustion, digestive difficulties, emotional overwhelm or sensitivity to medications and environmental stimuli. Families may find themselves consulting multiple specialists, with each addressing a particular symptom while the wider picture remains unclear. My approach considers the interaction between neurological development, physical health, psychological wellbeing and the individual's environment, recognising that neurodivergence is complex and that each person's experience is different.
Methylation is one of several biological processes involved in brain development, cellular function and neurotransmitter metabolism. Nutrients including folate, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 contribute to these processes, while genetic variations may influence aspects of their regulation. Through Lifecode Gx testing, I can explore relevant pathways involving MTHFR, MTR, MTRR, COMT and related genes. These findings are interpreted carefully because common genetic variations cannot explain or diagnose autism or ADHD. I examine them within the broader context of an individual's medical history, nutritional status and biochemical findings, particularly when there are additional health concerns that warrant investigation.
Depending on the symptoms and history, I may investigate nutritional deficiencies, gastrointestinal disturbances, impaired nutrient absorption, thyroid function, inflammatory activity, sleep difficulties and metabolic health. Functional laboratory testing, including organic acid analysis and gastrointestinal investigations, can sometimes provide additional information about specific physiological concerns. Medication responses, dietary restrictions and coexisting conditions are also important considerations. Identifying and addressing a treatable physical problem may improve comfort, concentration, energy or emotional wellbeing, even when the underlying neurodevelopmental differences remain unchanged.
My psychotherapy work adds another essential dimension. Sensory sensitivities, difficulties with relationships, anxiety, trauma and repeated experiences of being misunderstood can profoundly affect an individual's confidence and sense of safety. I work with children, adults and families to understand these experiences and develop support that respects individual neurological differences. By integrating psychological understanding with nutritional and biochemical investigation, I aim to identify additional sources of distress, support nervous-system regulation and help individuals develop greater wellbeing, confidence and resilience in their daily lives.
