For individuals and couples struggling to conceive, fertility difficulties can be physically exhausting, emotionally painful and deeply confusing, particularly when investigations produce no clear explanation. Conception depends on a complex relationship between reproductive hormones, egg and sperm quality, thyroid function, metabolic health, inflammation and the nutrients required for healthy cellular development. Irregular ovulation, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, recurrent miscarriage and unexplained infertility may involve different underlying mechanisms. My work begins by examining the wider physiological picture, including factors that may have received little attention during previous investigations.
One important area I explore is methylation, a biochemical process involved in DNA synthesis, cell division and the regulation of homocysteine. Folate, vitamin B12 and other nutrients are essential to these processes, particularly during early embryonic development. Through Lifecode Gx genetic testing, I can investigate variations in genes including MTHFR, MTR, MTRR and BHMT, considering their potential relevance alongside nutritional status and biochemical findings. Genetic variations alone do not establish the cause of infertility. Their value lies in helping build a more individualised understanding of how the body's nutritional and metabolic pathways function.
Depending on the person's history, further investigation may include reproductive hormone patterns, thyroid function, insulin regulation, nutrient deficiencies, inflammatory markers and digestive health. I also consider medication history, previous contraceptive use, dietary patterns and the possibility of impaired nutrient absorption. Where appropriate, functional laboratory investigations can provide additional information about hormone metabolism and metabolic health. These findings are interpreted together with established fertility investigations, including male reproductive factors, to identify potentially modifiable issues and develop an appropriate nutritional and therapeutic approach.
The emotional experience of fertility difficulties deserves equal consideration. Repeated disappointment, pregnancy loss, difficult medical experiences and the uncertainty surrounding conception can place considerable strain on relationships and psychological wellbeing. Drawing on my psychotherapy practice alongside functional medicine, I support individuals and couples through these experiences while addressing relevant physiological concerns. Treatment is personalised and may involve nutritional interventions, targeted supplementation, lifestyle adjustments and therapeutic support. The aim is to improve overall reproductive health, address identifiable contributing factors and provide informed, compassionate care throughout the fertility journey.
I have a great deal of experience in the field with many successful pregnancies. I am right here in St Albans and online to help you.
