Why can one person have a joint at a party and leave it there, while someone else is still wanting more long after everyone has gone home? The same question applies to alcohol, pain medication, food and gambling. Some of us are more vulnerable to addiction than others, and what begins as an occasional pleasure or a way of coping with life's difficulties can gradually, and in some cases, swiftly, become something that affects our health, relationships and ability to function. Understanding why this happens is an important part of finding a way forward.
The genetic tests that I do for my patients can provide really valuable insights into this vulnerability. Differences in the brain's reward pathways, nervous-system responses, methylation and detoxification processes can influence how we respond to substances and addictive behaviours. Excessive alcohol consumption, for example, can deplete essential nutrients, particularly B vitamins, and interfere with methylation, a process vital to healthy brain and body function. I can explore with you these biological influences alongside the psychological and emotional factors that contribute to addiction, building a much more individual understanding of what may be happening.
My work brings together psychotherapy, Mindscaping, natural remedies and individualised nutritional support to address the different factors that may be sustaining your addiction. Together, we explore the emotional experiences, established patterns and physiological responses that make change difficult, while identifying practical ways to support the nervous system and restore greater physical and emotional stability. I offer a very supportive, collaborative relationship in which you can speak openly about your difficulties, understand yourself more deeply and gradually regain confidence in your ability to make choices that support the life you want to live.
I can help you overcome addiction and understand what you need to maintain your recovery, so that the changes you make become a lasting part of your life. Come and work with me. It will change your life.
