Shoshannah Phoenix On Zinc Deficiency: When the System Begins to Lose Its Ground
Zinc is one of those nutrients that I rarely see in isolation. It tends to appear as part of a wider picture, where something in the system is no longer quite holding. Not dramatically at first, but gradually. The person becomes a little more reactive, a little less resilient, a little slower to recover. Over time, that loss of buffering becomes more obvious, and yet it is often attributed to stress, personality, circumstance or diagnosis, rather than to the underlying terrain.
In my work, I am always looking at that terrain. The nervous system, the genetic patterns, the environment, the lived experience, and the biochemistry all interacting together. Zinc sits quietly within all of that. It is not something that announces itself loudly, but when it is low, multiple systems begin to feel the strain.
It plays a role in methylation, particularly around enzymes such as MTR and BHMT, which are involved in recycling homocysteine and supporting the body’s capacity to methylate efficiently. In someone whose methylation pathways are already under pressure, whether through genetics, chronic stress or environmental load, low zinc can reduce the system’s flexibility. The person may then present with low mood, poor stress tolerance, hormonal shifts, histamine issues or a general sense that their system is struggling to keep up.
Alongside this, zinc is deeply involved in nervous system regulation. It helps modulate excitatory activity in the brain, particularly around glutamate, and supports the pathways that allow the system to settle. When zinc is sufficient, there is a greater sense of internal containment. When it is low, the threshold for activation drops. People often describe feeling more easily overwhelmed, more sensitive to noise or stimulation, less able to switch off, and more prone to anxiety or agitation.
This is one of the reasons zinc often comes up in conversations around attention, mood and emotional regulation. It has an influence on dopamine pathways, which affects motivation, focus and reward processing. In children, this can show up as difficulty concentrating, irritability, selective eating or behavioural dysregulation. In adults, it may appear as low motivation, emotional reactivity, poor sleep or that familiar sense of being both exhausted and wired at the same time.
There is also an important relationship between zinc and vitamin B6. Zinc is needed for B6 to be properly utilised, and B6 is required for the production of key neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and GABA. So when zinc is low, neurotransmitter balance can be affected indirectly as well as directly. This is why I tend to look at patterns rather than single nutrients. The system is always working as a whole.
Physically, zinc deficiency can show up in ways that are easy to overlook or misinterpret. Poor wound healing, stretch marks that do not repair well, skin issues such as acne, eczema or dermatitis, mouth ulcers, white marks on the nails, hair thinning, reduced appetite, altered taste or smell, and increased susceptibility to infections are all commonly associated with low zinc. In children, it often presents as selective eating, particularly avoidance of protein-rich foods, which then perpetuates the deficiency further.
Skin is often one of the places where this becomes visible. Zinc is involved in tissue repair and inflammatory balance, and when levels are low, the skin may appear less robust, slower to heal, or more reactive. Some people notice that their skin does not seem to respond well to sun exposure or lacks vitality, which is less about tanning itself and more about the skin’s ability to repair and adapt.
There is also the balance between zinc and copper to consider. These two minerals need to be held in relationship. When zinc is low, copper can become relatively more dominant, and this can influence mood, nervous system sensitivity and hormonal patterns. In practice, this can look like heightened emotional intensity, increased reactivity, or difficulty settling after stress.
Chronic stress plays a significant role here. When the system has been under pressure for a long time, nutrient status is often affected. Appetite changes, digestion becomes less efficient, sleep is disrupted, and the body prioritises survival over repair. Zinc is one of the nutrients that tends to be depleted in this process. Over time, this contributes to the picture many people describe as burnout or adrenal fatigue, although what I am usually seeing is a system that has simply become under-resourced.
What matters to me is not zinc in isolation, but what it represents. It represents part of the body’s ability to hold itself steady. To regulate. To repair. To recover. When it is low, that capacity is reduced, and the person feels it, even if they cannot immediately name why.
So rather than seeing zinc deficiency as a standalone issue, I see it as a reflection of a system that needs support. When it is addressed within the wider context of the individual, alongside the nervous system, the environment and the genetic landscape, the changes are often subtle but meaningful. A little more stability. A little more resilience. A system that begins to feel more able to meet life again.
