Why Allergies Are Increasing: The Gut, Butyrate, Mast Cells, and What You Can Do About It
There has been a noticeable shift over recent years in how people experience allergies, not just in frequency, but in intensity and range, with more individuals reacting to foods, environmental triggers, and seasonal changes in ways that feel disproportionate to the exposure itself. What sits underneath this is not simply the presence of allergens, but the way the immune system has been trained to respond, and increasingly, the research is pointing towards the gut as one of the central places where that training either becomes well-regulated or begins to lose its balance.
Within the gut, the microbiome is constantly producing signalling molecules that influence immune behaviour, and among these, butyrate has emerged as one of the most significant. It is produced when specific beneficial bacteria ferment fibres such as resistant starch, and it acts not only as a fuel for the cells lining the gut, but also as a regulator of immune activity, helping to maintain a level of response that is proportionate rather than excessive. What is particularly striking in the research is how directly butyrate appears to influence mast cells, which are key players in allergic reactions.
Mast cells function as rapid-response units within the immune system, releasing histamine and other inflammatory mediators when they detect what they interpret as a threat. This is useful when the threat is real and requires a fast response, but when the system becomes overly reactive, these cells can begin to fire too easily, leading to symptoms such as itching, swelling, sinus congestion, skin reactions, digestive discomfort, and a general amplification of inflammatory signalling. The research you shared highlights that butyrate reduces mast cell activation in experimental models, and that fibre-derived metabolites can lower the inflammatory signalling pathways associated with these cells. In practical terms, supporting butyrate and immune balance often involves working with foods that provide resistant starch and fermentable fibres, such as cooked and cooled potatoes or rice, green bananas, legumes where tolerated, and a range of plant fibres that nourish microbial diversity. It may also involve the use of targeted prebiotics or postbiotics, including butyrate itself in specific cases, although this is something that needs to be approached in a way that matches the individual’s tolerance and overall state of health. Alongside this, attention to sleep, circadian rhythm, and nervous system regulation plays a significant role in stabilising immune responses over time.
What becomes clear through both the research and clinical experience is that allergies are not simply about exposure to triggers, but about the internal terrain that determines how those triggers are processed. Butyrate offers a window into that terrain, highlighting the importance of the gut, the microbiome, and the broader regulatory systems that shape immune behaviour. When those systems are supported in a way that is tailored to the individual, the immune response often becomes more measured, more resilient, and less prone to the kind of overactivation that characterises allergic conditions.
