The Biological Terrain of the Nervous System: Minerals, Metabolism, Gut Health and Brain Function
The Biological Terrain of the Nervous System: Minerals, Metabolism, Gut Health and Brain Function

When people think about mental health they often imagine that the brain operates independently from the rest of the body. Yet the nervous system is inseparable from the biological terrain that surrounds it. The brain is profoundly influenced by metabolic health, nutrient availability, immune signalling, the microbiome and the body’s capacity to regulate inflammation and oxidative stress.

Every neurotransmitter produced in the brain is built from biological materials derived from food. Amino acids provide the raw building blocks for serotonin, dopamine and other chemical messengers. Vitamins and minerals act as cofactors that enable the enzymatic reactions required for neurotransmitter production. Fatty acids help form the membranes of neurons through which electrical signals travel. When any of these components are depleted or imbalanced the nervous system can begin to struggle.

Mineral balance in particular plays a quiet but powerful role in neurological health. Magnesium is deeply involved in calming neural excitability and supporting energy production within cells. Zinc influences immune signalling, neurotransmitter metabolism and synaptic communication. Copper participates in dopamine metabolism and mitochondrial function. When these elements fall out of balance the nervous system often becomes more reactive, fatigued or unstable.

Hair mineral analysis allows these patterns to become visible. Many individuals arrive with long standing mineral imbalances that have never been identified because standard medical testing rarely explores these subtler biochemical relationships. When mineral patterns are corrected through nutritional support the nervous system often begins to stabilise in ways that are both gentle and profound.

The gut also exerts enormous influence over the nervous system. A significant proportion of serotonin is produced within the digestive tract, and the microbial ecosystem living in the gut communicates continuously with the brain through the gut brain axis. Microbial metabolites travel through the bloodstream and influence inflammation, neurotransmitter production and immune signalling within the brain.

Organic acid testing can reveal microbial byproducts, mitochondrial stress and metabolic imbalances that quietly influence brain function. These markers often show patterns that help explain fatigue, anxiety, mood instability or cognitive fog that individuals have struggled with for many years.

When these biochemical signals are addressed through nutritional therapy, microbiome restoration and targeted supplementation, the environment in which the nervous system operates begins to change. The brain is remarkably responsive to shifts in its metabolic terrain.

Genetic testing often provides another crucial layer of insight. Variations in genes related to methylation, detoxification and inflammatory regulation influence how efficiently the nervous system maintains biochemical balance. Through LifeCode Gx testing I examine these genetic patterns and prescribe targeted nutritional support that corresponds to the needs revealed by the individual’s genetic profile.

For many people this process becomes the first time their nervous system has been explored as part of a whole biological ecosystem. Rather than focusing on symptoms alone we begin to understand the deeper terrain that has shaped their neurological health across time.

This work forms the foundation of how I support individuals who are navigating anxiety, mood instability, cognitive concerns or long histories with medication. By strengthening the biological terrain that underpins the nervous system, the brain often finds new stability and resilience.

About Shoshannah

Hi, my name is Shoshannah Phoenix. I work with individuals, couples, and families, especially where things feel complicated, tangled, or hard to make sense of.

My work uniquely blends talking therapy, my own mindscaping, functional medicine, cutting edge genetic testing, and natural holistic solutions to whatever ails you. I help people understand how their nervous system, body, thoughts, emotions, and relationships are connected - and how these patterns shape health, behaviour, and connection over time.

Many of the people I work with have complex or long-standing challenges. They may be living with anxiety, emotional overwhelm, OCD, trauma, chronic stress, complex health issues, neurodivergence, relationship difficulties, or patterns that seem to repeat across generations. Rather than looking at one piece in isolation, I work with the whole picture.

This is gentle, collaborative work. We move at a pace that feels safe and manageable, working with your system rather than pushing it. Whether we are working one-to-one or with couples and families, my role is to help you understand yourself more clearly, feel more regulated and supported, and find a way forward that truly fits you.
