Seaweed at Trevone: Life Between the Tides

I captured this image of seaweed at Trevone in Cornwall, one of the beaches that has become very special to me. I first visited in August 2022, and like so many places along the Cornish coast, Trevone has a quiet magic to it. When the tide moves out the rocks and pools reveal a landscape that feels almost like another world.

My focus on Trevone is on seaweed, something most people walk past without a second thought. Yet when you pause and really look at it, seaweed is an extraordinary form of life. These plants live in a constantly changing environment where the sea covers them for hours at a time and then withdraws again, leaving them exposed to air, wind and sunlight before the next tide returns.

For part of the day they exist completely underwater, moving with the rhythm of the sea, absorbing nutrients and light through the shifting currents. Then the tide retreats and the same plants are left resting on the rocks, glistening in the open air, adapting once again to a different environment.

Few living things move between two worlds so effortlessly. Seaweed has evolved to survive both immersion and exposure, darkness and light, constant movement and stillness. It is rooted in place yet always responding to the rhythm of the tides.

Standing on Trevone beach and watching these strands of seaweed move gently in the water or lie quietly across the rocks is a reminder of how adaptable life can be. The coastline is a place of transition, a meeting point between land and sea where living systems have learned to respond to constant change.

Nature is full of these beautifully balanced systems. When we slow down enough to notice them, they often mirror something about our own lives.

In my work I often think about the human nervous system in a similar way. Like the shoreline between land and sea, our nervous system is constantly responding to changing environments. It adapts to stress, relationships, experiences and biological processes that shape how we think, feel and behave.

Much of what influences our health and emotional wellbeing happens beneath the surface. Genetics, methylation pathways, mineral balance, detoxification processes and neurotransmitter regulation all interact quietly within the body. At the same time our life experiences, relationships and personal histories shape how our nervous system responds to the world around us.

Through genetic reports, functional health testing and nervous system understanding I help people explore those deeper layers. I often describe this approach as Timeline Health because it recognises that our biology and our experiences interact across the whole of our lives. Alongside this I use Mindscaping to help people understand the landscapes within their own minds and nervous systems.

Just as the seaweed at Trevone moves between water and air, between immersion and exposure, human beings also live within constantly shifting environments. Our internal systems are always responding, adjusting and seeking balance.

The shoreline has a way of reminding us of that quiet intelligence in nature. When we pause long enough to watch the seaweed moving gently with the tide, we are seeing resilience, adaptation and balance unfolding in its simplest form. In many ways the human system is not so different.

About Shoshannah

Hi, my name is Shoshannah Phoenix. I work with individuals, couples, and families, especially where things feel complicated, tangled, or hard to make sense of.

My work uniquely blends talking therapy, my own mindscaping, functional medicine, cutting edge genetic testing, and natural holistic solutions to whatever ails you. I help people understand how their nervous system, body, thoughts, emotions, and relationships are connected - and how these patterns shape health, behaviour, and connection over time.

Many of the people I work with have complex or long-standing challenges. They may be living with anxiety, emotional overwhelm, OCD, trauma, chronic stress, complex health issues, neurodivergence, relationship difficulties, or patterns that seem to repeat across generations. Rather than looking at one piece in isolation, I work with the whole picture.

This is gentle, collaborative work. We move at a pace that feels safe and manageable, working with your system rather than pushing it. Whether we are working one-to-one or with couples and families, my role is to help you understand yourself more clearly, feel more regulated and supported, and find a way forward that truly fits you.

I am right here… how can I help you?
