Shoshannah Phoenix On The Parallel Between The Sea Shore And Our Hidden And Connecting Systems

In August 2021 I visited Trevone's Rocky Beach in Cornwall for the first time. It quickly became one of my favourite beaches. Trevone has that beautiful Cornish character where the sea withdraws and reveals an entirely different world between the rocks. When the tide moves out, small pools of water remain scattered across the shoreline, each one holding a tiny ecosystem quietly continuing its life between the tides.

While exploring the rock pools that day I noticed a small pool filled with seaweed, algae and shells. At first glance it looked still and almost empty, but when I looked more closely life began to reveal itself.

In the centre of the pool a small mollusc rested against the rock, its shell nestled among the seaweed. Creatures like this move slowly across the surface of the rock grazing on microscopic algae. Around it the seaweed created a delicate underwater landscape, strands and branches forming shelter for countless tiny marine creatures that live in these pools.

If you look carefully there you can often see a tiny dark creature moving through the seaweed. It is likely a small amphipod or marine isopod. These shrimp like crustaceans are often only a few millimetres long and are almost invisible unless you stop and watch carefully. They weave through algae and seaweed feeding on organic material and quietly helping to keep the rock pool ecosystem in balance.

What fascinates me about rock pools is how easily they can be overlooked. Walking along the beach we might see nothing more than water trapped between rocks and seaweed. Yet when we pause and kneel down to observe more closely an entire living system becomes visible. Every plant, every small creature, every movement plays a role in maintaining the balance of that tiny world.

This is something I think about often in my work with people. Human health and emotional wellbeing are also systems that operate beneath the surface. What we first see in someone's life might be anxiety, chronic illness, emotional overwhelm or behavioural patterns that appear difficult to understand. But beneath those visible symptoms there are deeper biological and psychological systems quietly influencing the whole picture.

In my work I often explore those deeper layers through genetics, nervous system function and functional health testing. Genetic reports can reveal how certain pathways in the body operate, including methylation, detoxification, inflammation and neurotransmitter regulation. These biological processes shape how the nervous system responds to stress, how the brain processes emotion and how the body maintains balance over time.

Mineral balance and biochemical pathways also play an important role. Nutrients such as magnesium, zinc and other essential minerals influence neurological stability, hormone regulation and immune function. When these systems are out of balance the effects can ripple through both physical health and emotional wellbeing.

I describe this way of understanding health as Timeline Health because it recognises that our biology, our experiences and our environment interact across the whole of our lives. The nervous system is shaped not only by genetics but also by life events, trauma, relationships and the environments in which we live.

Alongside this I use what I call Mindscaping, a way of helping people understand the landscapes within their own minds and nervous systems. Just as a rock pool contains layers of interaction beneath the surface, the human mind also contains patterns, memories and biological responses that shape how we think, feel and behave.

Standing beside a rock pool at Trevone, watching these tiny creatures move quietly through seaweed and algae, it is impossible not to notice how complex and interconnected even the smallest natural systems are. Nature rarely operates through simple single causes. Instead it works through networks of relationships, feedback loops and delicate balances.

Human health works in much the same way. Beneath the surface of symptoms there are deeper systems interacting constantly with one another. Understanding those systems can transform the way we approach healing and wellbeing.

Sometimes a small rock pool on a Cornish beach offers the perfect reminder. What looks simple on the surface is often a living network of relationships quietly sustaining life beneath the water. When we take the time to observe more carefully an entire world reveals itself. 🌊🐚

About Shoshannah

Hi, my name is Shoshannah Phoenix. I work with individuals, couples, and families, especially where things feel complicated, tangled, or hard to make sense of.

My work uniquely blends talking therapy, my own mindscaping, functional medicine, cutting edge genetic testing, and natural holistic solutions to whatever ails you. I help people understand how their nervous system, body, thoughts, emotions, and relationships are connected - and how these patterns shape health, behaviour, and connection over time.

Many of the people I work with have complex or long-standing challenges. They may be living with anxiety, emotional overwhelm, OCD, trauma, chronic stress, complex health issues, neurodivergence, relationship difficulties, or patterns that seem to repeat across generations. Rather than looking at one piece in isolation, I work with the whole picture.

This is gentle, collaborative work. We move at a pace that feels safe and manageable, working with your system rather than pushing it. Whether we are working one-to-one or with couples and families, my role is to help you understand yourself more clearly, feel more regulated and supported, and find a way forward that truly fits you.

I am right here… how can I help you?
