Is OCD A Protection Mechanism? Understanding The Mind, The Timeline And The Nervous System
There is something I have come to recognise over decades of working with people who experience obsessive compulsive patterns, intrusive thoughts, and repetitive behaviours, and it is this. Over the course of the work, their understanding of what is happening within them begins to change. What has felt relentless, confusing, and in need of control begins to reveal itself as something far more organised, something that has developed over time with a clear purpose within the system. As that understanding develops, the focus moves away from trying to stop the pattern and towards understanding why it is there in the first place and what it has been doing for the person over time.
When I work with people in this way, I am not working at the surface level of symptoms. I am working inside the pattern itself. I am listening very closely to how the mind is organising the experience, and I am looking for the structure within it. What becomes clear very quickly is that there is a high level of vigilance within the system. There is a constant scanning, a need to anticipate what might go wrong, and a drive to stay one step ahead of something that feels uncertain or unsafe. This does not feel random from the inside. It feels necessary, and it is often accompanied by a strong sense of responsibility, as though maintaining that pattern is part of keeping things safe.
This is where the work moves into what I describe as Mindscaping and Timelining. I work with people to map out exactly what is happening within their mind. We look at the sequence of events, often using a clockface-based system, where a trigger occurs, a thought enters, and then the behaviour follows in a patterned loop. Within that loop, there is always a dialogue, what the person is saying to themselves, how the pressure builds, how the urgency increases, and how the behaviour temporarily relieves that pressure before the cycle begins again. When this is mapped out clearly, the pattern becomes visible rather than overwhelming, and that visibility is an important part of change.
Alongside this, we trace the pattern back along the timeline to understand when it first began. We are looking for the origin point where the feeling, the belief, or the internal pressure first became established. In many cases, this sits in earlier experiences, often in childhood, where the system adapted in response to something it could not fully process at the time. The thoughts, the beliefs about the self, and the strategies that developed at that point become embedded, and the current pattern is often a continuation of that original adaptation.
As this becomes clear, the work then involves supporting the person to understand their own mind in a much more precise way. This is where cognitive work (CBT) is important, helping them to recognise the pattern as it is happening, to understand the sequence, and to introduce what I often describe as internal stoppers. I plant seeds within the person’s own understanding of their pattern, so that they can begin to interrupt the loop rather than automatically following it through.
At the same time, I am always working with the biological side of the system. I use genetic testing to look at how the nervous system is functioning, including methylation pathways, detoxification capacity, neurotransmitter balance, and the role of inflammation. I am looking at specific gene pathways that influence how the system processes stress, how efficiently it clears toxins, and how well it regulates key neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin. When there are variations within these pathways, the system can become more reactive, more vigilant, and more prone to getting stuck in repetitive loops because it does not have the same biochemical flexibility to process and resolve internal stress.
This is where targeted nutritional support becomes very precise. It is not general supplementation. It is matched to the individual’s genetic profile and the way their pathways are functioning. By supporting methylation, improving detoxification, and reducing inflammatory load, the nervous system begins to operate differently. The reactivity reduces, the intensity of the loops can lessen, and the person is no longer working against a system that is under constant internal strain. Instead, the biology begins to support the psychological work, rather than undermine it.
In some cases, I also bring in constitutional homeopathic prescribing, where the remedy matches the full picture of the individual. Remedies such as Anacardium may be indicated where there is a strong sense of internal conflict, compulsion, or a divided sense of self. When the remedy is well matched, it can shift the underlying state of the system, allowing the person to move out of those repetitive loops more easily and with less internal pressure.
This work is a process of understanding the system in depth, working through patterns over time, and supporting change at multiple levels. As that process unfolds, people begin to experience their minds differently. The loops that once felt automatic become more visible, and with that visibility comes choice. The need to follow the pattern begins to reduce, not because it has been forced, but because the system no longer needs it in the same way.
This is the work I do. Working with the mind, the timeline, and the biology together, supporting people to understand why their system has organised itself in this way, and helping them to move out of those patterns into a way of functioning that feels more stable, more flexible, and more aligned with who they are now.
