How to Support a Baby with Hypermobility: A Practical, Whole-System Approach for Parents
When a baby is described as hypermobile, it can feel confusing and uncertain for parents. What I want to bring here is clarity and direction. There are things that can be done, and when they are done in a way that supports the whole system, babies often strengthen, organise, and develop far more stability over time than you might initially expect.
What matters most is how we understand what we are seeing. Hypermobility in a young child is not just about joints. It reflects how connective tissue, muscles, the nervous system, and the child’s overall biochemical terrain are working together. When those systems are supported, the body has the capacity to build more strength, coordination, and resilience as it develops.
One of the most important starting points is nutrition, because connective tissue is built from what the body has available. Protein plays a central role here. Collagen, which helps give structure and strength to tissues, is made from amino acids, particularly glycine, proline, and lysine. For a baby, this comes down to the quality and variety of their diet as they begin to eat more broadly. Bone broths, slow-cooked meats, eggs, and well-prepared whole foods provide the building blocks the body needs. This does not need to be complicated, but it does need to be consistent.
Vitamin C is essential for collagen formation. Without it, collagen cannot be properly produced or repaired. Including vitamin C-rich foods daily supports this process in a very direct way. This can be as simple as soft fruits, vegetables, and appropriate foods that a baby can tolerate and enjoy. Small, regular intake is more effective than occasional larger amounts.
Minerals are often overlooked, but they are central to how connective tissue forms and functions. Magnesium supports muscle tone and helps the body regulate itself. Zinc is involved in tissue repair and growth. Copper is needed for collagen cross-linking, which is what gives connective tissue its strength and integrity. These minerals need to be in balance, and they are best supported through a nutrient-dense diet, sometimes alongside carefully chosen supplementation where appropriate.
Digestion sits underneath all of this. A baby can be eating well, but if digestion and absorption are not optimal, the body will not be able to use those nutrients effectively. Signs such as bloating, discomfort, irregular stools, or sensitivities can be clues that the gut needs support. When digestion improves, everything else becomes more effective, because the body can actually access what it is being given.
Movement is just as important as nutrition, and it needs to be the right kind of movement. Babies develop strength and coordination through exploration. Time on the floor is incredibly valuable. Crawling, reaching, rolling, climbing over cushions, moving across different surfaces, all of these experiences help the nervous system learn how to organise the body and stabilise the joints. This is how strength is built from the inside out.
Carrying and physical interaction also play a role. Being held, moved, and gently challenged in different positions helps develop core strength and body awareness. Simple things like supported sitting, gentle bouncing, and playful interaction can all contribute to building stability in a natural and enjoyable way.
The nervous system is always involved in how the body holds itself. Some babies with hypermobility also show differences in tone or regulation. Supporting the nervous system through rhythm, routine, and calm, responsive interaction helps create a more stable foundation for movement and development. When a baby feels settled and regulated, their body tends to organise itself more effectively.
There are also times when the immune system and overall sensitivity of the child need to be considered. If a baby appears reactive, unsettled, or easily overwhelmed, supporting that aspect of their system can have a positive impact on how their body functions more generally. This may involve looking at diet, environment, and gentle ways of reducing overall load on the system.
From a functional medicine perspective, it can be helpful to look more closely at the child’s underlying terrain. This might include understanding mineral status, looking at how well nutrients are being processed, or exploring areas such as methylation and detoxification pathways. This is not about labelling a child, but about understanding how their system is working so that support can be tailored to them.
What I often see in practice is that when these areas are addressed together, not in isolation, children begin to change. They become stronger, more coordinated, and more stable in their movement. Their confidence grows as their body feels more secure. Development continues, but with a more solid foundation.
